The penetration of BNPL is now reflected in market figures as well.According to research by economists at the Federal Reserve, the six largest providers issued nearly $160 billion in consumer credit in 2025—almost double compared to two years earlier.
Pertaining to this market segment is that about half corresponds to traditional “pay in four” programs where purchases are typically paid off in four interest-free installments every two weeks. The remainder consists of short-term and long-term loans that may incur interest charges.
The data shows that while approximately 63% of BNPL credits issued in 2025 had zero interest rates; this figure was significantly higher at around 83% during the years of both 2020 and early-2021. this indicates a shift where now about one-third of the market involves interest-bearing products as companies expand their offerings beyond just four-interest-free payments.
The companies Block (parent company of Afterpay) and Affirm stand out as the leading players based on total lending volume; together they provided $95 billion worth of credits in just one year while controlling roughly around sixty percent of this growing market share overall within BNPL services sector itself!
Eυκολία ή οικονομική ανάγκη;
The firms promote BNPL products as a flexible means for managing cash flow between bill payment dates and upcoming paycheck arrivals.
For consumers awaiting their next paycheck soon enough—deferring a payment can indeed help avoid overdraft fees or late penalties incurred otherwise!
Bearing all these factors into consideration though—it’s evident from various studies conducted recently such as LendingTree’s survey results from last year indicating over fifty-four percent reported needing these loans simply just “to get by” financially! Only twenty-five percent disagreed with this finding altogether which raises some serious concerns regarding financial stability among many users today!
- Nineteen percent have utilized BNPL specifically for grocery shopping compared with fourteen percent only two years prior!
- A staggering forty-seven percent admitted delaying at least one payment within past twelve months alone!
- An amazing sixty-three percentage maintained multiple active loans concurrently throughout same timeframe period too!
- A quarter had three or more active debts outstanding concurrently during any given moment previously mentioned above too!
- An overwhelming sixty-eight percentage beleive utilizing such services leads them towards increased spending habits overall instead…
This convenience factor appears stronger than cost considerations themselves as thirty-one percentages choose these options primarily due ease-of-use while twenty-seven percentages cite quick approval processes being key motivators behind their choices made hear today rather than solely focusing on zero-interest benefits offered rather…
However it does raise some alarming questions when considering how consumers aren’t merely purchasing items via installment plans anymore but rather financing entire aspects surrounding daily living expenses altogether now too…
