The consequences are beginning to reach European refineries as at least three have been notified of cancellations or delays in shipments scheduled for the last ten days of September and even into November. Two othre European refineries are awaiting updates in the coming days regarding potential delays or cancellations for September shipments.
The suspension of deliveries is particularly critical for Europe as it further limits available supply during a time when reserves have already declined and access to choice sources is becoming more arduous and expensive.
This issue now extends beyond crude oil; shortages in refined products—especially diesel—are turning the energy disruption into a broader fuel crisis.
The oil companies warn: The major crisis is already here
Seniors from the American oil industry have warned for months that prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz woudl inevitably lead to a fuel crisis; they now believe this crisis has arrived.
► A fall nightmare at fuel pumps and natural gas
The global commercial fuel stocks have been declining for over six months while strategic crude reserves cannot be utilized indefinitely.Meanwhile, measures that previously mitigated risks to supply and prices have largely been exhausted.
Chevron’s CEO mike Wirth admitted that predicting oil price trends is extremely challenging but identifying any factor that could lead to immediate de-escalation remains elusive.
In simple terms: no one knows how high prices can go or how long this crisis will last.
The price of oil skyrockets
American crude has surged by 19% within three weeks as attacks on ships and energy infrastructure in the Middle East multiply.
The Houthis control Yemen’s western coast and the crucial Bab el-Mandeb Strait threatening Saudi Arabia’s maritime exports to Asia while also launching attacks on petroleum facilities within saudi Arabia.
Iran has also targeted tankers attempting to navigate through the strait of Hormuz despite U.S efforts to escort certain vessels through these waters.
Washington is enhancing intelligence sharing with Riyadh; according to an American official Centcom has established a unit in Saudi Arabia aimed at improving cooperation and planning support for Saudi forces.
However according to Axios Donald Trump rejected Riyadh’s request for U.S strikes against Houthis with investors believing that conflict may continue past November’s midterm elections intensifying uncertainty around supply and pricing.
DIESEL AT THE CENTER OF THE CRISIS
The situation surrounding diesel markets is even more acute; In America its price reached an all-time high of $6.23 per gallon while gasoline which had dipped below $4 during summer rebounded back up to $4.32.
Diesel supplies are limited due primarily due operational disruptions at refineries linked with conflicts across Middle East & Russia simultaneously occurring demand expected rise due harvest season & use fuels agricultural machinery.
Diesel shortages can quickly ripple throughout economy raising costs transportation agricultural production industrial activities ultimately impacting consumer goods reaching market.
CINA RETURNS TO INTERNATIONAL MARKETS
Additional pressure on global supplies comes from China which had covered nearly half its daily consumption from domestic reserves providing temporary relief international markets until recently when Beijing returned larger purchases international suppliers increasing Chinese demand coincides diminishing available quantities middle East exacerbating upward pressure prices.
The Oil Triggers Bond Market Crash
This energy shock now transmits itself onto global bond markets where sharp increases both oil & natural gas prices heighten fears inflation will remain elevated forcing central banks maintain tight monetary policy raise interest rates further.
► Global sell-off bonds: US borrowing costs hit two-decade high – historic records Germany Japan
Investors engage massive sell-offs government bonds causing yields rise sharply ten-year US Treasury yield surpassed % reaching % highest level as . Yield thirty-year US bond climbed % also highest since .In Europe yield German ten-year bond soared % highest level as. In Japan yield corresponding title reached % marking year high Analysts note interest rate markets become “hostages” both oil geopolitical factors.
RETURNING INTEREST RATE HIKES
Disruptions energy supply keep inflationary pressures alive strengthen argument stricter monetary policy If Federal Reserve leaves open possibility new hikes bond yields could move higher dollar strengthen further
For Europe this means costlier borrowing states businesses households moment when energy costs rising again growth threatened
Trump management insists disruption temporary exploring two main levers contain prices increasing Venezuelan production strengthening refining capacity USA
Problem neither solution offers immediate relief Increasing output requires time investment like creating expanding refineries
White House currently dismisses possibility temporarily banning American exports refined products such diesel arguing such action wouldn’t automatically lower domestic prices
Executives ExxonMobil Chevron ConocoPhillips warned back March prolonged closure Straits Hormuz would cause fuel shortages Their warning seems confirmed question no longer whether major fuel crisis begun but rather how long it lasts how high will reach impact European economy households
