Tι είναι το Ψυχοσάββατο;

the Saturday before the sunday of Meatfare is known as “Saturday of Souls” or Ψυχοσάββατο. This marks the first of two such Saturdays in the year (the second occurs on the Saturday before Pentecost). The Church established this observance as many individuals have passed away at a young age or while away from home—at sea or in mountains—and some due to poverty did not receive proper memorial services. Thus, “the holy Fathers compassionately instituted this memorial for all those who have departed this life piously throughout the ages.”

This day is meaningful as we remember our deceased loved ones since they have not yet been judged by Christ during the Sunday of Meatfare when we commemorate His Second Coming.We invoke God’s infinite mercy through our prayers and ask Him to grant them rest while also reflecting on our own mortality and being stirred towards repentance.
