Γιορτή 8/1 – Όσιος Αγάθωνας
Eιρηνικά εκοιμήθη ένας από τους πιο φωτισμένους και έμπειρους ασκητές της ερήμου, ο Όσιος Αγάθων. Η πνευματική κληρονομιά του και τα σοφά λόγια του κοσμούν τις σελίδες του Γεροντικού. Ο εμβληματικός Γέροντας που συνδέθηκε με την αρετή της διάκρισης άφησε την τελευταία του πνοή παραδίδοντας διδάγματα ταπεινοφροσύνης που είναι επίκαιρα μέχρι σήμερα.
The fame of the Saint for his unparalleled spiritual composure had spread widely and attracted the interest of other ascetics. According to records from the Gerontikon referenced by saint.gr, a group of monks sought to test his patience and see if Saint Agathon could become angry. When they approached him, they began hurling heavy insults at him saying: “Are you Agathon? We hear you are a fornicator and proud.” His response was disarming: “Yes, that is how it is indeed.” The visitors continued their trial by asking him: “Are you Agathon the chatterbox?” Without any sign of disturbance, he replied: “Yes, I am.”
The turning point in their dialog came when the monks posed their final question: “Are you Agathon the heretic?” At that moment Saint Agathon reacted promptly and categorically: “I am not a heretic.” Surprised by this sudden change in his demeanor, the monks asked him to explain why he accepted some insults but not this one: “why did you accept those other slanders but not this one?” The Elder’s answer became a lesson in Orthodox spirituality: “I accepted those as they are beneficial for my soul; though ‘heretic’ signifies separation from God and thus I could not accept it.” Hearing his words left those present astonished at his insight and discernment as they departed spiritually enriched.
The spiritual radiance emitted by Saint Agathon was evident even from the early years of his monastic journey. A notable incident preserved in Gerontikon recounts how one of the Desert Fathers referred to young Agathon with the honorary title “Abba.” When another monk expressed surprise asking: “You made him ‘Abba’ already?”, the response revealed much about this man’s character: “I did not make him so; rather it is indeed due to his way of life.”
