Γιορτή 12/3 – Όσιος Θεοφάνης Ομολογητής

the Orthodox Church honors the memory of Saint Theophanes the Confessor, who was born in 760 to Isaac and Theodoti, a family known for their piety. Although he lost his father at the tender age of eight, his mother ensured that he received a extensive education and spiritual guidance. According to saint.gr, Saint Theophanes the Confessor met his end in exile on Samothrace around 815 (or according to some sources in 818), having been banished by Emperor Leo the Armenian for refusing to accept heretical views on iconoclasm and remaining faithful to the decisions of the Seventh Ecumenical Council in which he had participated.

Aspiring towards an ascetic life from an early age, he initially obeyed his motherS wishes and married Megalo, a woman of considerable wealth and deep faith. though, his inclination towards monasticism prevailed; thus their marriage was amicably dissolved. His wife became a nun at the Monastery of Prinkipo under the name Irene while Theophanes sought refuge in Polichnio around 781—a monastery near mount Sygrian—located either in Media or more likely at Cape Sigri on Lesbos. His spirituality and education earned him great respect within religious circles leading him to be summoned to Nicaea for the Seventh Ecumenical Council in 787 alongside prominent abbots such as Plato from Sakoudion Monastery and monks Nikephoros and Niketas from Midikion Monastery as well as Christoforos from Mikros Agros Monastery.
