The origins of Saint Anastasia trace back to Rome where she was born and raised in the comforts of the upper class. Her father was Praetextatus, a prominent Roman patrician, while her mother was Fausta. The young Anastasia stood out not only for her noble lineage but also for her exceptional beauty and education combined with an impeccable character and deep-rooted temperance that made her a role model of her time.

Soon after reaching adulthood, according to saint.gr , she entered into marriage with Poplianus, a powerful Roman lord and fervent supporter of paganism. Despite the environment surrounding her life at that time, she encountered the teachings of Christ and chose to be baptized—a decision that would drastically alter the course of her existence.

Eager to keep her faith hidden due to her husband’s harsh demeanor towards Christians, Saint Anastasia engaged in notable acts behind closed doors. Disguised in simple clothing so as not to raise suspicion, she secretly visited prisons delivering food and financial aid to imprisoned Christians. Beyond material support, she offered comfort through kind words and assistance to those who were suffering.

This unwavering dedication earned her the title “Pharmacolytria,” reflecting both healing from physical ailments and also spiritual ones—her ability to alleviate pain became legendary among those who knew of her deeds.

The secretive actions did not remain undiscovered forever; when Poplianus learned about his wife’s activities he became furious. Initially attempting persuasion through advice failed as Saint Anastasia remained steadfast in faith even when subjected to physical abuse by him.

This unyielding resolve infuriated poplianus so much that he reported his wife directly to Emperor Diocletian who promptly ordered her imprisonment hoping hardship would break down her spirit. Yet even during confinement amidst deprivation she continued praising God from within prison walls which led Diocletian ultimately deciding on torturing her further.

No matter how severe the trials were imposed upon saint Anastasia; she never renounced Christianity’s tenets nor wavered from them until finally succumbing at the stake in 290 A.D., thus entering eternity recognized as a Great Martyr within Church history.
