Άγιος Φώτιος ο Μέγας Πατριάρχης Κωνσταντινουπόλεως
The Great Photios lived during the reigns of the emperors Michael (842 – 867 AD), son of theophilus, Basil I the Macedonian (867 – 886 AD), and Leo VI the Wise (886 – 912 AD), son of Basil. he was born in Constantinople in 810 AD (or according to some sources in 820 AD) into a pious and distinguished family that fought for the honor and veneration of sacred icons. His parents were Saint Sergius and Irene who faced persecution under the iconoclast emperor Theophilus (829 – 842 AD). Saint Sergius was a brother to Patriarch Tarasius (784 – 806 AD) and was paraded as a prisoner through the streets of Constantinople; he lost his wealth and was exiled with his wife and children to a barren place where he died from hardships as a Confessor.
The holy Photios excelled first in high political offices. When Patriarch Ignatius was forcibly removed from his patriarchal throne by imperial order, Photios ascended it in the year 858 AD; he stood out for his holy life and vast education. His ordination as Bishop took place on Christmas Day of that same year by Bishops gregory of Syracuse, Basil of Gortyna, and Eulampius of Apamea. Prior to this event, he had been tonsured as a monk and later received various degrees within priesthood.
The holy Photios announced his election through synodal letters to Eastern Patriarchs according to established customs while emphasizing peace restoration within the Church of Constantinople. Though, before he could solidify this peace there arose conflict between extreme political factions supporting Patriarch Ignatius known as “Ignatians.” They gathered at St. Irene’s church where they excommunicated him while proclaiming Ignatius as patriarch again.
The saint convened a Synod at Sts Apostles’ church addressing this emerging issue which condemned actions taken by “Ignatians” declaring them irregular while asserting that since Ignatius resigned from office he could no longer be considered patriarch; should he seek reinstatement then automatic penalties would apply including deposition or excommunication.

Εντοπίστηκε στην λεγόμενη μονή της Ερημίας ή Ηρεμίας, που ήταν κοντά στην Χαλκιδόνα. Παλαιότερα η Σύναξή του ετελείτο στο Προφητείο, δηλαδή στο ναό του Τιμίου Προδρόμου και Βαπτιστού Ιωάννου, που βρισκόταν στη μονή της Ερημίας, ενώ τώρα τελείται στην ιερά πατριαρχική μονή της Αγίας Τριάδος στη νήσο Χάλκη, όπου ιδρύθηκε και η Θεολογική Σχολή της Μεγάλης του Χριστού Εκκλησίας.
