Γιορτή 27/7 – Άγιος Παντελεήμων

The feast of Saint Panteleimon is celebrated by the Orthodox Church on July 27th and he is regarded as the protector of physicians and patients. Originally named Panteleon, he hailed from Nicomedia in Asia Minor and lived during the reign of emperor Maximian (286 – 305 AD). His father, eustorgios, was a pagan who converted to Christianity under his son’s influence while his mother, Euboule, came from a Christian family.

The young physician studied medicine under Euphronios and embraced Christianity after being baptized by Elder Hermolaos, a priest in the Church of Nicomedia. He is credited with numerous miraculous healings; as an example, when a snake bit and killed a child, Panteleon called upon Christ to restore the child’s life. This event strengthened his faith and drew him closer to christianity.

A pivotal moment in his life occurred when he healed a blind man who regained his sight and rushed to inform the emperor about it. The man openly declared that he had been healed in Christ’s name and had come to believe himself. This declaration prompted an immediate reaction from Maximian who ordered Panteleimon’s execution.

Panteleimon was subsequently brought before the emperor where Maximian commanded tortures aimed at forcing him to renounce his faith. Despite enduring severe suffering without wavering in belief—according to tradition—Christ appeared before him as hermolaos providing him with strength during this ordeal.

The order for beheading was given when suddenly a voice from heaven called out not “Panteleon,” but “Panteleimon.” As the executioner raised his sword it bent like wax under heat rather of cutting through flesh. Witnessing this miracle led many soldiers present at that moment to convert to Christianity themselves.

Panteleimon willingly accepted martyrdom thereafter; legend has it that instead of blood flowing from his wound there poured forth milk while an olive tree nearby blossomed unexpectedly bearing fruit.

Earning recognition for offering free medical services throughout his life makes him revered as the patron saint of doctors and those suffering ailments; thus every July 27th marks an occasion filled with special reverence for him.
