Στην ανάλυσή του με τίτλο «What’s the Matter With France?», ο Κρούγκμαν αναφέρει ότι οι πιέσεις που δέχεται η γαλλική οικονομία δεν προέρχονται μόνο από τη γενικότερη αναταραχή στις διεθνείς αγορές ομολόγων.

The aging population further exacerbates the situation as it increases pension expenditures at a faster rate than public revenues unless there are changes in economic and fiscal policy.

Krougman focuses on the French pension system which he considers especially generous and challenging too sustain under current demographic conditions.

The retirement age in France remains among the lowest in Europe while Emmanuel Macron’s reform to gradually raise it to 64 years has faced fierce political and social backlash that has hindered its implementation.

The Marine Le Pen and the fear of a new fiscal crisis

the most important issue does not only concern internal political balances within France but also its position within the Eurozone.
In contrast with the United states which has its own currency and central bank France cannot unilaterally issue euros to meet its obligations.
This means that a serious loss of investor confidence could lead to a dangerous cycle of rising borrowing costs worsening fiscal pressures and further questioning of the country’s ability to service its debt.

Why ECB may not be able to save france
/span>

Pole Krugman reminds us about Eurozone debt crisis during 2010s when then president Mario Draghi pledged in 2012 that he would do “whatever it takes” to preserve euro.
This statement calmed markets as it was interpreted as a strong assurance that ECB was ready for intervention preventing an uncontrolled state debt crisis.

However Krugman questions whether such intervention would be politically or economically feasible today for France. As he explains during previous crisis southern European countries had implemented extensive spending cuts adopting strict austerity programs even though he believes these measures were excessive from an economic standpoint they allowed those countries claim they had taken thier share responsibility thus deserving European support.

Conversely according economist France is still far from credible path toward fiscal adjustment.Under these circumstances any potential rescue could face severe political backlash from creditor nations especially Germany but also Southern European states who were forced into painful austerity measures in order secure financial assistance.

“Too big to save” – The nightmare for Eurozone
The biggest obstacle facing any potential rescue plan for France would be according Krugman enormous economic cost involved.

As second largest economy within Eurozone such intervention might require scale so large that it would test not only financial capabilities European support mechanisms but alsothe political cohesion of European Union

Thus Krougman raises question whether country has now moved beyond category economies considered “too big fail” into one those economies are “too big save”.

such crisis warns could create deep divisions among European states calling into question solidarity unity Eurozone

For now however Nobel laureate economist acknowledges financial markets view this scenario as real yet limited risk

Return stability politics possible more moderate economic policy future government or even decisive ECB intervention could prevent worst outcomes

Nevertheless Krougman does not hide his concern fact optimistic outcome depends so manyuncertain conditions

As concludes prefers optimism regarding future French should not rely too heavily hope ultimately everything will turn out favorably
