Γιορτή 20/7 – Προφήτης Ηλίας

Η σημερινή ημέρα είναι αφιερωμένη στον Προφήτη Ηλία, μια από τις πιο αναγνωρίσιμες προσωπικότητες της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης. Ο λόγος για τον οποίο η Εκκλησία τον τιμά είναι το προφητικό του έργο και η αδιάλειπτη πίστη του στον αληθινό Θεό, καθώς και τα θαύματα που αποδίδονται σε αυτόν κατά τη διάρκεια της ζωής του. Το όνομά του αναφέρεται πολλές φορές στην Καινή Διαθήκη και ο ίδιος ο Ιησούς Χριστός έκανε αναφορές στον Προφήτη Ηλία, επισημαίνοντας τη σπουδαία θέση που κατέχει στην ιστορία της σωτηρίας.

“Ο πατέρας του Ιωάννη του Προδρόμου, ο Ζαχαρίας, προανήγγειλε ότι ο γιος του θα ερχόταν «ἐν πνεύματι καὶ δυνάμει Ἠλίου», έχοντας δηλαδή τον ίδιο ζήλο και τα ίδια πνευματικά γνωρίσματα.”

“Ο Ιησούς Χριστός, μιλώντας για τον Ιωάννη είπε χαρακτηριστικά: «Αν θέλετε να το παραδεχθείτε αυτός είναι ο Ηλίας που έμελλε να έλθει».”

“Κατά τη Θεία Μεταμόρφωση οι μαθητές είδαν τον Μωυσή και τον Ηλία να συνομιλούν με τον Χριστό.”

the Prophet Elijah lived in the 9th century BC and was the son of sobak from the region of Gilead; hence he is often referred to as the Tishbite. According to tradition, at his birth his father had a vision where two men dressed in white gave him the name “Elijah,” swaddled him in fire and nourished him with flame.The priests in Jerusalem interpreted this vision as a sign that he would become a great prophet of God.

The miraculous Acts of Prophet Elijah

A significant miracle attributed to Prophet Elijah was an extended drought; through his prayer it did not rain for three and a half years. During this time he sought refuge by a brook across from Jordan where a raven brought him food daily according to Scripture. Later on, saint.gr , mentions that he settled in Zarephath of Sidon and was hosted by a widow whose meager supply of flour and oil never ran out while he stayed there. When her son died,Elijah prayed and restored the child back to life.

The Conclusion of His Earthly Journey

The pursuit by Jezebel continued after these events leading Elijah to flee to Mount horeb where God revealed Himself not through storm or earthquake but through gentle whispers teaching him how divine presence is manifested.

Towards the end of his life he performed another miraculous act crossing the Jordan River with his cloak.
According to Scripture,
the Prophet Elijah did not experience physical death but was taken up into heaven by a chariot of fire.
It is also noted that many years after his ascension,
he sent letters warning King Joram about straying from true worship.
The book Sirach praises Prophet Elijah for his wondrous deeds calling him one of biblical history’s greatest figures.
